The Game Accused of Impersonating Police

NEW YORK -- Police think The Game should stick to rap, not law enforcement.

The rapper was arrested this week after telling a cab driver that he was an undercover police officer and convincing him to run a series of red lights, police said Saturday.

The 26-year-old, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, allegedly picked up a livery cab shortly after he had appeared on "Late Show with David Letterman." The driver drove about 13 blocks before the vehicle was pulled over Thursday night, police said.

Taylor faces a charge of impersonating a police officer, said Sgt. Kevin Hayes, a police spokesman.

A lawyer for The Game told the New York Post the charges were "ridiculous."

"This harassment of The Game and other hip-hop artists by the NYPD has got to stop _ and a painful loss at trial may be just the solution," attorney Jeffrey Lichtman said.

Lichtman said the cabbie was a terrible driver trying to get out of trouble. He also claimed police were tailing the rapper all night.

Hayes said the rapper was told he would have to appear in court at a later date. A message seeking comment from the Manhattan district attorney's office was not immediately returned Saturday.

Universal Music sues MySpace.com for copyright infringement

Universal Music Group on Friday sued MySpace.com, claiming the online social-networking hub illegally encourages its users to share music and music videos on the site without permission.

The recording company is seeking unspecified damages, including up to $150,000 for each music video or song illegally posted on the Web site.

The lawsuit is the latest legal salvo in a wider conflict by established media companies against Internet firms whose technology is challenging the traditional ways music, video and other content are distributed to consumers.

In its complaint, filed in U.S. District Court, Universal Music contends MySpace, a unit of News Corp., attempts to shield itself from liability by requiring users agree to grant the Web site a license to publish the content they upload to the site. Users, however, have no such authority over works they don't own.

The Web site also "encourages, facilitates and participates in the unauthorized reproduction, adaptation, distribution and public performance," according to the suit.

Universal contends that much of the media posted by users of MySpace is not user-generated at all, but actually music and videos stolen from copyright owners.

"MySpace is a willing partner in that theft," the lawsuit claims.

In the complaint, Universal singles out features on the Web site that enable users to save copies of videos to their profile pages or share them with others on the site. Universal Music also claims the MySpace Video and MySpace Music services also enable users to access copyright material without permission.

Universal Music, a unit of Paris-based Vivendi SA and the world's largest recording company, is home to recording artists such as U2, The Killers and Kanye West.

"Our music and videos play a key role in building the communities that have created hundreds of millions of dollars of value for the owners of MySpace," the company said in a statement. "Our goal is not to inhibit the creation of these communities, but to ensure that our rights and those of our artists are recognized."

In response to the lawsuit, MySpace issued a statement saying it is in full compliance with copyright laws and is confident it will prevail in court.

"We have been keeping UMG closely apprised of our industry-leading efforts to protect creators' rights, and it's unfortunate they decided to file this unnecessary and meritless litigation," the statement read. "We provide users with tools to share their own work - we do not induce, encourage, or condone copyright violation in any way."

Earlier Friday, MySpace said it was testing technology aimed at enabling copyright holders to flag user-posted videos on the site that they find contain unauthorized copyright material. The flagged content is then removed by MySpace. The company expects to roll out the feature in a few weeks.

Currently, MySpace takes down content from its users' pages when it receives a notice from a copyright holder.

Last month, MySpace began using "audio fingerprinting" technology to block users from uploading copyright music to the site. That technology works by checking audio files against a music database from Gracenote Inc.

Those steps, however, failed to sway Universal Music. Efforts between the two companies to forge a licensing deal failed this week.

In a speech in September, Universal Music CEO Doug Morris accused MySpace of violating copyright laws. The executive also charged video-sharing site YouTube.com of doing the same. The record company and YouTube Inc. have since reached a licensing deal.

Last month, the recording company filed separate copyright infringement lawsuits against online video-sharing sites run by Grouper Networks Inc. and Bolt Inc.

Google Accidentally Spreads Virus

Google may have accidentally infected some subscribers of the Google Video mailing list with the W32/Kapser.A@mm virus, better known as the "Karma Sutra" worm. At least three separate e-mails went out over the list that may have been infected, reaching approximately 50,000 subscribers. The virus will overwrite selected files on a specific date and was first discovered in February of this year.

"If you think you have downloaded this virus from the group or an email message, we recommend you run your antivirus program to remove it," the company said in an e-mail that went over the list on Wednesday. Google officials said the company was taking steps to prevent future occurrences.

LOST again for 13 weeks.

Lost gets lost after tonight's episode, but will a 13-week break hurt the island mystery's momentum?

ABC's scheduling plan was hatched in May to maintain viewer interest by avoiding dismally low-rated repeats. Instead, the season was split in two, with six episodes this fall and 16 more to run uninterrupted from Feb. 7 to mid-May's two-hour finale. (Day Break, another serialized drama, fills the 9 ET/PT gap starting next week.)

But programmers didn't expect Lost's audience — 16.2 million viewers this season — to slip another 12%, the biggest decline of any returning ABC series. They didn't count on CBS rival Criminal Minds beating it last week.

And they didn't figure that NBC's new Heroes, a similarly mythologized serial, would become more popular among a core crowd of adults ages 18 to 34.

"In a perfect world, for us, the fans and the network, we would love to air the show in the way 24 airs," continuously from January to May, says executive producer Damon Lindelof. But doing so would require fans to go hungry for eight months, and force the network to live, as Fox does, without one of its top series in the fall.

And to pad a 35-week season, there'd be those frequent pesky breaks for repeats, which last season drew about a third of the show's typical audience. That led one savvy webmaster to start IsLostaRepeat.com, which consisted of a home page with a one-word answer.

"With a show as heavily serialized as ours, going in fits and starts was a worse idea than running it in consecutive blocks," executive producer Carlton Cuse says.

"This is better than airing repeats, and it gives the network an opportunity to try and build another successful drama," says Magna Global USA analyst Steve Sternberg. "The real concern is if Day Break tanks and Lost viewers start watching something else and don't return."

Tonight's sixth episode (9 ET/PT) offers no "jaw-dropping" close, but it does provide a "mini-cliffhanger," Lindelof says, "that will ultimately frustrate and intrigue viewers enough that they have to come back after 13 weeks off the schedule."

Fans will rejoice that The Others' imprisonment of Jack, Sawyer and Kate will be resolved in tonight's episode, completing the arc that writers mapped out after learning of ABC's start-and-stop scheduling plan.

Kate will "finally sleep with one of those guys," Cuse says. And the entire ensemble will be more widely seen come February.

"We promise that when we are back, we will definitely be revisiting the characters back on the beach, and they will be central to the show," he says, even as the mystery of The Others, their origins and their penchant for kidnapping children is slowly revealed.
